A COUPLE of weeks ago a Mozambican Airlines (LAM) commercial jet crashed in Namibia’s Bwabwata National Park, killing all 33 people on board — 27 passengers and six members of the crew. This was one of the worst accidents in recent aviation history in the region.

In the fall of 2012 we began a project to research state-owned and private airlines in Africa, looking at their shareholding, management structures, business models, safety standards and human resources — focusing on training and retention of engineers and critical operations staff.
